So I have come to find that there are only two sizes of garlic…small and “elephant garlic”. And the recipe called for a medium garlic so I got an “elephant garlic” and a couple small ones to see which is better.
The recipe says to get 10 but I figured for testing I would start with only a couple. I bought 6 Normal Garlic at Winco: $0.48 each
I bought 1 Elephant Garlic at Winco: $2.58 each
The cheapest Olive oil I could find was 17fl oz “Hi-Top Light in flavor Olive Oil” at Winco: $3.21
French Bread: $1.48
Roasted garlic a grand total of: $10.15
(note the price would change depending on if you already have oil and how many cloves of garlic you buy)
So to start I cut the tops off the small garlic which I was shocked was much harder then I was expecting. You really have to put some effort into the cuts. I then placed them in a big glass casserole bowl I had because I realized that I really don’t have anything that can go in the oven other then cookie sheets and a casserole dish. I pay have to take a trip to the store later for a better oven dish.
My mom says that the olive oil in this recipe can be substituted with normal cooking oil so I am going to do three little garlic cloves in regular cooking oil (canola oil) and the other three cloves in Olive oil to see if there is a cooking difference and taste difference. When putting the oil on I only spread it on the top of the cloves…so I hope the skin doesn’t catch fire…nah it’s couldn’t…could it? The garlic is now covered with tin foil and is in the stove at 350 degrees. It’s 10:08pm now…I will watch to see how long it takes them to cook. So now we wait… I am hoping that my glass container will actually benefit me since I can see through it to see if the garlic is burnt or not.
It is now 10:25pm and I have decided that this was really stupid to start doing so late at night when I have to get up tomorrow morning at 3:00am. And from what I can kind of see through the glass the garlic cloves look exactly the same as they did when I first put them in. It’s now 10:33pm and I am starting to smell the garlic aroma. However still no browning yet. 10:45 and still no brown-ness and this is when the recipe says it should be done. Hummm… 11:04pm and they still are not done, I put some more olive oil on the three and left the other three alone. I am glad I wasn’t making this for company on a time budget, however I would like to go to sleep. It’s now 11:15 and the garlic is getting closer but I am tired so I turned off the oven but I left the garlic inside…maybe it will cook more and be perfect once the oven is cooled down. Yeah not likely but right now I could care less because I am exhausted. My boyfriend got home about half an hour ago and is now passed out on the floor waiting for me to finish waiting on the garlic... stupid garlic. 11:20pm and I am pulling the garlic out and leaving it on the stove to cool off.
When I woke up at 3:00am this morning the garlic was cool and it was a light brown color. I then stuck them in the refrigerator to get cold.
Ok so I just put some garlic on some bread and both oils made them taste the same. Now I love garlic, which is part of the reason I decided to try to make this. I love love love it! But I’m not going to lie it tastes like B.O. (Body Oder) Ewww! Maybe I didn’t cook them long enough? Or maybe it was the size of the garlic? Nope I just relized that I was suppose to put the garlic cut side down. And on a foil lined baking sheet not a bowl. Crap…! Ok note to self when making things, even simple things make sure to have the recipe with you and check it over and over. Don’t just read it once and go do it otherwise your food will taste like B.O.
Ok well lets go with attempt number 2. Since the oil didn’t matter I will now see if the size matters. I’m going to follow the instructions this time :) and I will use the Elephant garlic with olive oil. Here we go… The elephant garlic seems to fall apart easier but this time I put the oil on and now the garlic is cut side down on a tin foil covered cookie sheet. Garlic is in at 10:55am. Alright I pulled the garlic out of the oven a little early at 11:45 and it looks like the picture now :) So now I have to wait for it to cool before I test out the taste.
Ok so the Elephant garlic turned a green color after it cooled and didn't spread very well on the bread…and as far as taste blah. I would not recommend making this one. I tried two different ways to make it and it has yet to taste good :) So either I fail or this recipe fails.
