When I went to the store there were only 2 sizes of Angel food cake and none of them were a 9 inch cake so instead I got the biggest they had which was an 8 inch.
Angel Food Cake from Winco: $2.89
Now the rest I bought in the San Juan Island so the prices are more expensive. Which was part of the reason I have changed some things in the recipe. I was going to do an all raspberry cake because that sounded better then lime + Orange + Raspberry. And then I was going to sprinkle fresh raspberries on top. However when I got to the store the raspberries where $13 for ½ a flat. And in that case I would rather just save my energy and buy a cake. So I switched from raspberry to blueberry.
Blueberries: $3.88
The other problem was that they only had swirl flavored sherbet…so instead I bought a sorbet because the sorbets had only one flavors but of course after I realized how much the raspberries where I changed my mind to the blueberries and the blueberry sorbet they had was a mix with cranberry so I gave up and went with the blueberry cranberry sorbet. They also had for $5.99 a gallon of sherbet, which would have been cheaper but I think the taste quality would have gone way down if I had gotten that. Now when I was at the store I didn’t know what the difference was between sherbet and sorbet…they looked the same so I figured it would work. Plus I was tired of walking back and forth from the fresh fruits to the frozen ice creams, that and I was getting frustrated because the island is so expensive and they don’t have much to choose from.
After I bought the sorbet my aunt said the difference is that sorbet doesn’t have dairy in it so it’s a different consistency. So we’ll see how it spreads on the angel food cake.
Sorbet Haagen-Dazs Cranberry blueberry all natural sorbet: $3.38 for a pint (I bought 2 even though the recipe calls for 3)
Topping -Cool Whip: $1.69
Total for the cake: $15.22
(now keep in mind this will most likely be cheaper but since I was in the San Juan Islands, WA buying some of the stuff it was more expensive because the stores have to pay to have items shipped on to the Island.
So when I got home I put the angel food cake in the freezer to harden it a little so that it would be easier to cut. And I left the sorbet in the fridge so it would soften up a little. I waited till I would squeeze the container a little. Then I pulled the angel food cake out and cut it in 3 pieces instead of 4 since I only bought 2 pints of sorbet instead of 3 pints. I was surprised how easy it was to cut. I used a bread knife and you want to be careful not to smash the cake or to cut your other hand.
Then I scooped the sorbet out onto one later and then placed a layer of cake on top and then I scooped another layer of sorbet on top of that and then I placed the last cake part on top. Super easy! I didn’t use all 2 pints of sorbet though. I used one whole pint on the first sorbet layer and then I only used ½ a pint on the second layer. Make sure you do it semi quick so your sorbet doesn’t melt all over the place. When your done throw it back in the freezer for an hour so it can harden back up. During this time you can do what ever you want in fact I went and took a nap. When I woke up I took the cake out and started to spread the cool whip on the cake. Make sure you do NOT stir the cool whip!! If you do it will become runny and gross! Trust me my mom did it once…opps. So just let it thaw in the refrigerator
Once your done putting the cool whip on top I just sprinkled some blueberries on top and then lined the bottom to make it look cute and then I put it back in the freezer till we were ready to eat it. I was shocked at how easy it was! I mean the hardest part was just finding what I wanted/needed at the grocery store.
I brought the cake to my Uncle and Aunt’s place and EVERYONE loved it! It was light and very refreshing and perfect for the summer. My mom tried it the next morning and said it was even light enough that you could eat it in the morning with out feeling gross. So I was happy about that, they even wanted the recipe and said I could make it for them again. So yay!
Easy level: Soooo easy!
Taste level: Everyone was happy!
Look Level: It was pretty!
So over all I say this is a good recipe :)
